About the Camino

Here is some overall info or intro to what is the Camino.  There is LOTS of information on the internet – overwhelming amount.  I will not try to duplicate this info but simply share my experience.

Here is some basic info from the internet (I will share links throughout):

  • Camino de Santiago is located in Spain.
  • English names Way of St. James, St. James’s Way, St. James’s Path, St. James’s Trail, Route of Santiago de Compostela, and Road to Santiago,
  • The pilgrimage routes, known as pilgrim ways, to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain.
  • Tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried.
  • Many follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth.
  • It is also popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts as well as organized tours.

Now for me and my experience, I first heard of the Camino about 15 – 20 years ago.  For seven years I did the Pilgrimage to Martyrs Shrine in Midland, Ontario, Canada. http://martyrs-shrine.com/

Depending on starting point it is 7 – 8 days of walking.  It usually begins the first weekend of August each year.  There are several groups in southern Ontario that do this pilgrimage every year.

It was while doing this pilgrimage that I met people who either did the Camino or were planning to do it.  I thought that was kind of cool.  As I learned more about it, I realize that it should be added to my bucket list and do it when I could afford the time.

Well, the time is now!  I plan to do the Camino in August / September of 2017.  Let’s do it!
